Main Duties and Responsibilities

The General Operative/Foreman will be primarily concerned with supporting the efforts of all staff and other relevant statutory provisions and in particular will be required to:

Provide, in support of all fisheries staff, comprehensive improvement and development services within any part of a region, and/or any other area assigned within one or more fisheries regions;

Provide, in support of other staff, comprehensive conservation and protection services within any part of a region and/or any other area assigned within one or more fisheries regions.

Guideline Duties

To carry out the following duties on all fisheries in connection with their maintenance, improvement, development and protection:

Handle boats in all weathers including repair and maintenance;

Use, maintain and do minor repairs to outboard engines;

Mount, repair, set and service nets;

Make-up, set and service lines and otter boards;

Maintain, set and service drum-nets and trap-nets;

Assist in electrical fishing operations on rivers and canals;

Improve and maintain spawning and nursery grounds;

Trap and strip fish in spawning season;

Patrol streams, count redds and protect fish against poaching;

Prepare and service bushes to collect perch spawn, trap spawning perch, net shoaling perch;

Assist in recording data on fish captured, including length, weight, stomach, contents, etc.

Assist in the operation of trawlers;

Plant trees on lake shores, river and canal banks;

Erect and maintain stiles, footbridges, clear weeds;

Use chemicals to control flora and fauna;

Maintain stores, including repairs, painting etc.

Work on improving the approach to all fisheries;

Construct small car-parks;

Clear heavy growth along banks and shores;

Erect fishing stands, platforms and catwalks;

Construct flat-bottom fishing punts;

Prepare fishing competition sites;

Assist in checking on illegal fishing and removal of gear in illegal use;

Operate mechanical weed cutters.

To carry out the following duties on fish hatcheries/fish farms;

Prepare hatchery trays, troughs, screens, etc., for hatching ova;

Strip fish each year;

Tend ova in hatchery;

Carry out minor maintenance of grading and pumping equipment;

Feed fry several times daily;

Prepare ponds for rearing larger fry, feed and grade same, as necessary;

Maintain ponds and water supply thereto, including shuttering and concrete work, as necessary;

Maintain buildings and grounds at fish farms;

Transport and stock fish;

Operate and maintain cages for the rearing of fish;

To carry out the following protection duties;

Accompany and participate in providing patrol services with other fisheries staff;

Assist with gathering evidence and attending at court and giving evidence when required.
